PALEOKASTRO

Paleokastro is located on the east side of the island, between Agia Theodoti and Psathi. Built on the top of a hill, it offers endless views to Paros, Naxos, Amorgos and the Small Cyclades. It is probably a Byzantine castle, from which part of the fortress and the walls are preserved. The picturesque church of Panagia Paleokastritsa is built inside the walls.

ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE OF SKARKOS

It is the oldest and best-preserved prehistoric settlement. Skarkos hill is located on the west side of Ios. An Early Cycladic settlement that is maintained in excellent condition and covers ​​about 11 acres was discovered in the area. The overall arrangement of the settlement is clearly visible, as one can distinguish building complexes, streets and squares. Furthermore, there are preserved two-store buildings along with their courtyards and walls. The movable finds include clay and stone utensils, marble figurines as well as intact vessels. If you are in Ios, do not miss the opportunity to visit this truly unique archeological find.

ELYTIS THEATER

An open theater with 1000 seats, built in 1997 in compliance with the ancient Greek standards. It was designed by the German architect Peter Haupt who was a fan of Ios and an honorary citizen. It is built on the old landfill of Ios, turning it into a place of culture, while marble and stone from the island were used for its creation. Do not miss the opportunity to enjoy some of its excellent performances or just to admire the impressive construction and the wonderful view to Chora and the beach of Mylopotas.

TOMB OF HOMER

The Tomb of Homer is located on the hill of Psathopyrgos, above Plakotos bay, on the north side of the island. The sight consists of the ruins of a tower of the Hellenistic period, which dominates a highly imposing landscape and offers a unique, breathtaking view. The Tomb of Homer is one of the places that is really worth visiting. A marked path of about 10 minutes leads to the monument and along that path one can find a covered kiosk that offers a limitless view of the sea in all its vastness.
